True Colors Fund Hosts Fall Salon In Los Angeles

HAWKINS MIKITA was excited to once again put together an informative salon so that LA residents can learn more about and support CYNDI LAUPER's TRUE COLORS FUND, which works to end homelessness among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth, creating a world in which young people can be their true selves.

Together with our sponsors, NCompass, The Beverly Center, and Angeleno Magazine, the TRUE COLORS FUND Fall Salon had nearly 100 supporters for an evening at The London West Hollywood.

We were joined by the amazing Rivianna Hyatt, a TRUE COLORS FUND True Fellow, who shared her story of growing up homeless and the amazing young people she has met, including her class of True Fellows who are working to change the world, on her journey to success.

With the support received at the Fall Salon, TRUE COLORS FUND will be able to accomplish their benchmarks for 2016:

  • Enact change via public policy initiatives for broader non-discrimination protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth and for increased federal funding to support programs and resource centers working with homeless youth.

  • Expand inclusive services via True Colors Fund’s True U online training platform. True U (short for University) provides series of short, engaging, interactive lessons to establish a common understanding about LGBT youth homelessness among those who interact with young people, like social workers, police officers, and teachers.

  • Expand its youth leadership programs into Los Angeles by placing a True Fellow in L.A. The True Fellowship offers up to seven LGBT young people across the nation with experiences of homelessness the unique opportunity to create, develop, and execute a six-month project that contributes to a more inclusive world in which LGBT youth are affirmed in their identity.

Thanks to the generosity of The Beverly Center, TRUE COLORS FUND was able to donate one hundred gift vouchers valued over $100 to the LA LGBT Center and Covenant House California for LGBT homeless youth to use at The Beverly Center in order to purchase necessities and gifts during the holiday season.
